商賈(上書陽反鄭注考工記云𧶜販買也客行販曰𧶜說文從貝從商省也經作商非也下姑五反杜注左傳云賈賣也鄭注周禮云居賣曰賈說文從貝西聲假借字也)。

商賈 (traveling and resident merchants: the upper character has the fanqie shu + yang. Zheng's commentary on the Kaogongji says: "Shang (𧶜) means trading and buying. Traveling merchants who peddle are called shang." The Shuowen says it is formed with the "cowry" semantic classifier and an abbreviated form of shang (商). The sūtra writes it as 商, which is non-standard. The lower character has the fanqie gu + wu. Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan says: "Gu (賈) means to sell." Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: "Stationary merchants who sell are called gu." The Shuowen says it is formed with the "cowry" semantic classifier and the xi (西) phonetic component; it is a phonetic loan character).
