Theatrical performances (敗皆 [bài-jiē] fanqie. Note: theatrical performances [pai] are what entertainers do for comic play to gladden the eyes. Sancang: Pai means whistling, whistling being a blowing sound. Shuowen: Pai means play; the character takes the radical ge with the phonetic xu, xu pronounced 虛猗 [xū-yī] fanqie).
