苦酷（古文俈嚳焅三形今作酷同口拮反說文酷急也苦之甚曰酷亦暴虐也白虎通曰酷者極也教令窮極也）。

苦酷 (The ancient script has the three variant forms 俈, 嚳, and 焅; today it is written 酷, all identical, with the fanqie 口拮 [kù]. The Shuowen jiezi states: '酷 means urgent and severe.' The extremity of suffering is called 酷; it also means tyrannical and cruel. The Baihu tong states: '酷 means the utmost; orders and edicts enforced to the extreme.')
