Mixed and clinging (混, the first character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 胡本 [hu/ben]. Gu Yewang says: '混 means filthy and turbid.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It takes 水 as radical and 昆 as phonetic component.' 著, the second character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 直略 [zhi/lüe]. The Kaosheng says: '著 means to adhere').
