Flies and fleas (蠅蚤: the first character has the fanqie y[ì] + [z]ēng. Mao's commentary on the Shijing notes: "The insect that is the fly soils white making it black, and soils black making it white." The Fangyan states: "Between Chen and Chu, west of the Pass, and between Qin and Jin, it is called 蠅 (yíng); in Eastern Qi it is called 羊 (yáng)." Guo Pu remarks: "This is merely a phonological shift, not accurate speech. Nowadays people of Jiangdong pronounce 'sheep' (羊) with the sound of 'fly' (蠅); whenever it is like this, a distinct term should not be established." The Shuowen says: "An insect with a large belly; composed of 黽 and 虫. 黽 has the pronunciation měng." The sūtra writes it with 'silk' [糸] as 繩, which is incorrect. The second character has the fanqie z[āo] + [l]ǎo. Han Feizi says: "Marquis Zhao of Han scratched a flea and pretended to drop one." The Huainanzi says: "Employing toads to catch fleas." The Kaosheng says: "A dog louse." The Shuowen says: "A jumping insect that bites people; sometimes written with the insect radical 虫." In the sūtra it is written as 蚤, which is an error).
