欄楯（上音蘭下音順說文蘭檻也縱曰欄橫曰楯楯間子曰櫺子俗謂之鈎欄欄楯二字並從木形聲字盾字從厂從十從目）。

欄楯 (first character pronounced 蘭 [lán]; second character pronounced 順 [shùn]. The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Railing.' Vertical posts are called 欄, horizontal bars are called 楯. The lattice slats between the 楯 are called 櫺子; commonly referred to as balustrades (鈎欄). Both characters 欄 and 楯 have the radical 木 and are phono-semantic characters.
