壘堞 (first character, fanqie: 力 + 鬼 [lěi]. Zheng's commentary on the Liji states: '壘 means layered walls; military ramparts.' The Guangya states: 'Layered.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'A rampart moat; derived from 土 with 厽 as phonetic; a pictographic character.' The second character, fanqie: 恬 + 協 [dié]. Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan states: '堞: the low parapet walls atop a city wall are called 堞.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Low crenellated wall atop a rampart; derived from 土 with 枼 as phonetic.' 枼 is pronounced with the fanqie 塩 + 接 [yè].)
