阿難慙（下雜甘反賈逵注國語慙色在顏也尚書云惟有慙德說文云慙愧也從心斬聲經作慚俗字通用）。

Ānanda felt ashamed (阿難慙: the lower character is *za* + *gan* [can]. Jia Kui's commentary to the Guoyu says: '慙 is shame appearing on the face.' The Shangshu says: 'Only having shameful conduct.' The Shuowen jiezi says: '慙 means ashamed. It is formed with 'heart' (心) as semantic classifier and 斬 as phonetic.' The sūtra text writes 慚, a vulgar character used interchangeably.)
