Washing and wiping (洗拭): The upper character is xi plus li fan; the lower character is sheng plus li fan. Washing away the filth and defilement of the body with water, and also wiping it dry with soft cloth. The Shuowen states: 'Takes "hand" (手), with shi (式) for sound.'
