畜牲(下省英反鄭注周禮云牛馬羊豕雞犬曰六牲杜注左傳曰改牛名曰牲說文從牛生聲)。

畜牲 ('domestic animals'; the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 省 + 英. Zheng [Xuan's] commentary on the Zhouli says: "Oxen, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, and dogs are called the six domestic sacrificial animals (牲)." Du [Yu's] commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "Giving an ox a designation [for sacrifice] is called 'sheng' (牲)." The Shuowen says it is formed from [the radical] 牛 with 生 as the phonetic component).
