蝙蝠 [bat] (Pronounced with the fanqie 方眠 [biān] and 方目 [fú]. The Fangyan states: "蝙蝠, 服異, 蟙䘃, and 靈鼠 are all one single creature, with different names according to regional dialects." Cui Bao's Gujin zhu states: "The bat is also called the immortal rat, and also named the flying rat. At five hundred years of age its color turns white and its brain becomes heavy; when perching on things its head hangs down, hence it is called 'hanging upside down'. If one eats it, one becomes an immortal." 蟙䘃 is pronounced 墨 [mò]. Vinaya texts writing 蟬蝮 are in error).
