浮囊 (floating bladders: the first character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 附無. The Yunying says: 'Fú (浮) means to float.' The Guangya says: 'Fú means to drift.' Zheng Xuan's commentary to the Book of Rites says: 'Being on top is called fú.' Jia Kui's commentary to the Guoyu says: 'Fú means light.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Fú means to float; it derives from 水 with 孚 as phonetic.' The second character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 諾即. The Yunying says: 'Náng (囊) is a tuò (橐, pronounced 託).' The Jixun says: 'One with a bottom is called náng; one without a bottom is called tuò.' It also says: 'A large one is called náng; a small one is called tuò.' Both are implements for holding things. In the small seal it derives from 橐 [混] abbreviated, from [(咒-几+?)/廾] [女耕], and from 衣. I examine that what the sūtra calls a floating bladder is an air bladder. One wishing to cross the great sea relies on the light and buoyant power of this air bladder.)
