惇肅（下嵩育反孔注尚書云肅敬也嚴也爾雅肅肅恭也謚法曰強德剋義曰肅執心决斷曰肅說文持事謹敬也從聿在𣶒上戰戰兢兢肅然懼而嚴敬也會意字聿音尼輙反開音恚緣反也）。

惇肅 ("sincere and solemn": the lower character has the fanqie 嵩育 [sù]. Kong's commentary to the Shangshu says: "Sù means reverent; it means solemn." Erya says: "Sùsù means respectful." The Shifa says: "Strong in virtue and overcoming through righteousness is called sù; holding the mind with firm decision is called sù." Shuowen says: "Holding to affairs with attentiveness and reverence; composed of 聿 standing over 𣶒, trembling with awe, solemn with fear and strict reverence." It is an associative compound. 聿 has the fanqie 尼輙 [niè]; 𣶒 has the fanqie 恚緣 [yuān].)
