昧鈍（上莫佩反集訓云昧冥也廣雅昧闇也韓康伯云日入為昧韻英云昧暗不明也說文從日從抹省聲也下徒頓反蒼頡篇云鈍頑也案頑者識暗濁也韻英云兵刃不利也說文云鈍錭大牢反錭頑鈍也從金屯音豚聲也）。

昧鈍 ("dull and obtuse"): The first character has the fanqie reading [m- + -wɑi = mèi] (莫佩反). The Jixun says: "昧 means dark." The Guangya says: "昧 means dim." Han Kangbo says: "When the sun sets it is 昧." The Yunying says: "昧 means obscure and lacking clarity." The Shuowen says it is formed with the radical 日 ('sun') and an abbreviated 末 as phonetic. The second character has the fanqie reading [d- + -wən = dùn] (徒頓反). The Cangjiepian says: "鈍 means stubborn (頑)." Examining 頑: it refers to knowledge that is obscure and turbid. The Yunying says: "A weapon blade that is not sharp." The Shuowen says: "鈍 is 錭 (fanqie 大牢反); 錭 means stubborn and dull. It is formed with the radical 金 ('metal') and 屯 (pronounced tún) as phonetic."
