愆咎（上羗乹反孔注尚書云愆過也杜注左傳云愆失也說文從心衍聲衍音演下音舊古字也孔注尚書云咎惡也鄭箋詩云咎猶罪過也爾雅咎病說文災也古文尚書以為罪咎之字從人從各人各者相違也）。

Fault and blame [愆咎] (The first character has the fanqie qiang + qian. Kong [Anguo's] commentary on the Classic of Documents says: "Qian means an error." Du [Yu's] commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "Qian means a slip." The Shuowen says: "Classified under radical 'heart' with 'yan' [衍] phonetic." Yan has the sound yan [演]. The second character has the sound jiu; an ancient character. Kong's commentary on the Classic of Documents says: "Jiu means evil." Zheng's commentary on the Odes says: "Jiu is like transgression." The Erya says: "Jiu means defect." The Shuowen says: "A calamity." The Old Text Classic of Documents took it as the character for blame and sin; classified under radical 'person' and radical 'ge' [各]; differing persons are contrary to each other.)
