研覈（上齧堅反廣雅研熟也說文研磨也從石幵聲幵音牽下諧革反漢書云其審覈之說文云覈考實事也文字典說云凡考事於西窄之處邀遮其辭得實覈也從西敫聲敫音擊西音呀賈反）。

Investigate and examine [研覈] (The first character has the fanqie nie + jian. The Guangya says: "Yan means to examine thoroughly." The Shuowen says: "Yan means to grind; classified under radical 'stone' with 'jian' [幵] phonetic." Jian has the sound qian. The second character has the fanqie xie + ge. The Book of Han says: "Investigate and examine it carefully." The Shuowen says: "He means to examine into the facts." The Wenzi dianshuo says: "In interrogating affairs in an enclosed place, intercepting the person's words to obtain the truth is he. Classified under xi [西] with 'jiao' [敫] phonetic." Jiao has the sound ji; xi has the fanqie ya + gu.)
