Jars and urns (盎甕: the first character is pronounced *a* + *lang* [= *àng*]. The *Erya* says: "An *àng* is an earthenware vessel." In the Jianghuai and Wu-Chu regions it is called a *gāng*. 缸 is pronounced *gang*, or in the falling tone. The second character is pronounced *wu* + *gong* [= *wèng*], the standard character; it is a large earthenware vessel, made of porcelain or pottery, deep and round, narrow at the mouth and wide at the belly. In Vinaya texts it is written with 公 as 瓮, a vulgar character).
