Ruò zhù 若鬻 (or congee; the second character is pronounced with the fanqie zhōng + rù. The Wenzi jilüe says: 'Zhù means thick-cooked rice made into thin gruel.' Anciently it derived from lì 鬲, written as 鬻, the standard form. Modern clerical script abbreviated it to 粥. In the Vinaya text the popular character is used. Nào [in nào zhǔ] is pronounced lì; lì 鬲 is pronounced lì, meaning a cauldron).
