Silent and abashed (默赧): For the first character, the fanqie is 瞢 (m-) plus 北 (-ok); it is sometimes written 嘿, which is a popular variant. The Shenglei says that 默 means quiet and not speaking. The Shuowen jiezi says that it means a dog suddenly chasing someone; it is formed with the dog radical (犬) and 黑 as the phonetic element. For the second character, the fanqie is 儜 (n-) plus 簡 (-an); the Kaosheng states that 赧 means being ashamed and blushing red in the face. The Shuowen jiezi writes it with 㞋 as 赧, which is the standard character; in the vinaya text it is written with the skin radical (皮), which is incorrect and also a popular variant. The Xiao Erya says that having a countenance of shame is called 赧. The Shuowen jiezi says it means blushing red with shame; it is formed with the red radical (赤) and 㞋 as the phonetic element, with 㞋 pronounced 尼 (n-) plus 展 (-an).
