牆柵（上匠羊反顧野王云牆垣也杜注左傳云人之有牆以蔽醜惡也說文垣蔽也從爿從嗇爿音同上下音策考聲云竪木為牆曰柵從木形聲字也）。

Walls and palisades (the first character has the fanqie jiang + yang; Gu Yewang says: "牆 [qiáng] means a boundary wall (垣)." Du [Yu]'s commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "Human beings have walls to screen foul and unsightly things." The Shuowen says: "A boundary wall to screen; it takes 爿 and 嗇 as radicals; 爿 has the same sound as the character above." The second character has the fanqie [ce]; the Kaosheng says: "Setting up upright timbers to make a wall is called 柵 [zhà]; it takes wood [木] as radical and is a phono-semantic character").
