窺覘（上犬規反考聲窺覻也覻音清預反周易窺其戶文字典說下視也說文從穴規聲下勅燄反杜注左傳云覘伺也鄭注禮記覘闚視也說文從見占聲也）。

To peer and spy (窺覘): For the first character, the fanqie is 犬 (q-) plus 規 (-ui). The Kaosheng states that 窺 means to peek (覻, pronounced 清 [q-] plus 預 [-ü]). The Zhouyi states, 'Peering through the door.' The Wenzidian shuo states that it means to look downward. The Shuowen jiezi states that it is formed with the cave radical (穴) and 規 as the phonetic element. For the second character, the fanqie is 勅 (ch-) plus 燄 (-an). Du [Yu]'s commentary on the Zuozhuan states that 覘 means to spy on. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the Liji states that 覘 means to peek and look. The Shuowen jiezi states that it is formed with the seeing radical (見) and 占 as the phonetic element.
