怯憚（上欺脅反顧野王云怯畏劣也方言云難去也說文作㹤云多畏也從犬去聲下檀爛反鄭戔詩云憚難也異也廣雅驚也說文撣忌惡也從心單聲）。

Timid and fearful (for the first [syllable, the fanqie is] 欺 + 脅. Gu Yewang says: "*Qie* means fearful and weak." The *Fangyan* says: "Difficult to leave." The *Shuowen* writes it as 㹤, saying: "Much afraid." It is composed of 犬 [dog] with 去 as phonetic. For the second [syllable, the fanqie is] 檀 + 爛. Zheng's *Jian* commentary on the *Classic of Poetry* says: "*Dan* means difficult; it means strange." The *Guangya* says: "Startled." The *Shuowen* says: "*Dan* means to detest and abhor." It is composed of 心 [heart] with 單 as phonetic).
