Plucking to play (the first [syllable has the fanqie] 枚 + 賣. The *Kaosheng* says: "*Jie* means to comprehend." The *Shuowen* says: "To cleave." It is an ideographic compound composed of 刀 [knife] cleaving ox horns. The second [syllable] is pronounced *bó*, a colloquial expression; it is proper to write the character 撣, pronounced with the fanqie 達 + 丹, meaning to pluck the arched harp (*konghou*). The *Kaosheng* says: "*Dan* means to pluck; to touch; like strumming a zither." When the Vinaya text says *bai konghou* [plucking the arched harp], it is the colloquial vernacular of the streets. It is composed of 手 [hand] with 單 as phonetic).
