嚳虛（上空穀反顧野王云嚳[日/出/八/((犀-尸)-牛+十)]虐也白虎通云嚳者極也言其施行窮極也說文急苦之甚也從學省聲律文從酉作酷是酒厚味而極美也非義也或從人作俈）。

Extremely empty (for the first [syllable, the fanqie is] 空 + 穀. Gu Yewang says: "*Ku* means cruel and tyrannical." The *Baihu tong* says: "*Ku* means the utmost, saying that the administration of punishments is pushed to the limit." The *Shuowen* says: "Extreme urgency and suffering." It is composed with an abbreviated 學 as phonetic. In Vinaya texts it is written with 酉 as 酷, which denotes rich and extremely delicious wine, not the correct meaning here.
