Sugar-cane and lotus root (藷蕅): the first character is pronounced with the fanqie zhu-ru (zhu). Wang Yi's commentary on the Chuci states: "Zhu is sugar cane." Gu Yewang states: "The yam (shuyu) is called the upper zhu." The Shuowen also states: "Sugar cane; it takes 'grass' (草) as semantic classifier and has zhu (諸) as phonetic component." The second character is pronounced with the fanqie wu-gou (ou). The Kaosheng states: "Ou is the root of the lotus." The Erya states: "The he is the fuqu; its root is ou." The Wenzi dianshuo states: "The root of the fuqu; it takes 'grass' (草) and 'water' (水) as semantic classifiers and has yu (禺) as phonetic component." Yu has the same pronunciation as above. In the Vinaya text it is written as 藕, which is also acceptable.
