伉敵（上康浪反顧野王云伉敵偶也杜注左傳云敵也說文從人元聲偶音五苟反下庭歷反考聲云敵對也匹也左氏傳云敵當也古今正字仇也從攴啇聲也啇音滴）。

Match and adversary (伉敵: the first is pronounced [康 + 浪] *kàng*. Gu Yewang says: '伉 means an equal match.' Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan says: 'An adversary.' The Shuowen has it with rén and yuán phonetic; 偶 is pronounced [五 + 苟] *ǒu*. The second is pronounced [庭 + 歷] *dí*. The Kaosheng says: '敵 means opponent; equal.'
