龕堀（上坎含反考聲云龕鑿山壁為坎也廣雅云龕盛也方言云受也說文云龍皃也從龍今聲下髠骨反又作窟或作崛也毛詩云蜉蝣之堀窟穴也顧野王云堀掘地為室也說文云堀窟突也從土屈聲也）。

Niche and cave (龕堀: the upper character has the fanqie k[ǎn] + [h]án; the Kaosheng says: '龕 means hollowing out a mountain cliff to make a niche.' The Guangya says: '龕 means to contain.' The Fangyan says: 'To receive.' The Shuowen says: 'The appearance of a dragon; it takes lóng as radical and jīn as phonetic.' The lower character has the fanqie k[ūn] + [g]ǔ; it is also written as 窟 or as 崛. The Mao Commentary on the Shijing says: '"The cave (堀) of the mayfly" means a burrow or cave.' Gu Yewang says: '堀 means digging out the earth to make a chamber.' The Shuowen says: '堀 means a cave or cavern; it takes tǔ as radical and qū as phonetic').
