稗莠（上排賣反鄭箋詩云十椑九穀也杜注左傳云稗似穀者也古今正字禾別也從禾卑聲也下由酒反顧野王云草之似禾苗者也尚書云若苗之有莠也文字典說云莠似禾而無實也從草秀聲）。

Tares and weeds (稗莠: the upper character has the fanqie p[ái] + [m]ài; Zheng's gloss on the Shijing says: 'Ten portions of tares to nine portions of grain.' Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan says: 'Tares resemble grain.' The Gujin zhengzi says: 'A variety of grain; it takes hé as radical and bēi as phonetic.' The lower character has the fanqie y[óu] + [ji]ǔ; Gu Yewang says: 'A weed resembling sprouts of grain.' The Shangshu says: 'Like weeds among the sprouts.' The Wenzi dianshuo says: 'Weeds resemble grain but bear no fruit; it takes cǎo as radical and xiù as phonetic').
