[山/妻]媵（上正妻字下承證反考聲媵謂從嫁也杜注左傳云送女曰媵也方言云媵寄也又云託也文字典說云媵之以姪娣從女勝省聲）。

Wives and concubines ([山/妻]媵; the upper character is properly 妻. The lower character [媵] is fanqie 承證. The Kaosheng says: '媵 refers to an escort bride.' Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'To escort a bride is called 媵.' The Fangyan says: '媵 means to lodge.' It also says: 'To entrust.' The Wenzidian shuo says: 'To accompany the bride with nieces or younger sisters.' It is composed with 'woman' (女) as semantic, with 勝 abbreviated as phonetic).
