雄傑（下乾蘗反鄭注禮記云傑謂才能也詩傳云傑特立也箋云英傑也考聲云才過萬人曰傑也淮南子云智過千人者謂之傑也古今正字云敖也從人桀聲敖音五刀歹）。

雄傑 (The second character has the fanqie pronunciation 乾 + 蘗 [jié]. Zheng [Xuan's] commentary on the Liji says that 傑 refers to 'talent and ability'. The commentary on the Shijing says that 傑 means 'standing out uniquely'. The Jian commentary says it means 'heroic excellence'. The Kaosheng says: 'One whose talent surpasses ten thousand people is called a 傑.' The Huainanzi says: 'One whose wisdom surpasses a thousand people is called a 傑.' The Gujin zhengzi says it means 'arrogant'; it has the radical 人 with 桀 as phonetic; 敖 has the pronunciation 五 + 刀).
