鋸解 ("to saw apart"): The first character has the fanqie reading [k- + -iɤ = jù] (居御反). The Guoyu says: "For moderate punishments, knives and saws were used." Jia Kui says: "Using a knife to saw and cut off, referring to punishments like capital decapitation, castration, amputation of the nose (㓷, pronounced yì), and amputation of the feet (刖, pronounced yuè)." The Cangjiepian says: "A saw that severs objects." The Shuowen says: "To hack and clash (搶, fanqie 戚陽反; 搪, pronounced táng). It is formed with the radical 金 ('metal') and 居 as phonetic." The Kaosheng says: "搶搪 means a saw; the Fangyan states it is a dialect synonym for a saw." The second character has the fanqie reading [k- + -ɛ = jiě] (隹買反). The Kaosheng says: "解 means to divide, sever, and separate."
