Regard and stinginess (顧吝): The upper character has the fanqie gu + ku (gù). Zheng Xuan's subcommentary to the Mao Shijing says: ‘Turning the head around is called gù.’ It also says: ‘Gù is like looking.’ It also says: ‘Gù means to care for.’ It takes “head” (頁) with gù (雇) as phonetic. 頁 has the fanqie xie + jie (xié); 雇 has the fanqie gu + ku (gù). The lower character has the fanqie li + zhen (lìn). Kong Anguo's commentary on the Shangshu says: ‘Lìn means to begrudge.’ The Fangyan says: ‘Greedy and unwilling to bestow is called lìn.’ The Shuowen says the standard form is written as 吝: ‘Lìn means resentment; it takes “mouth” (口) with wén (文) as phonetic.’ It is also written as 恡, which is a popular form; or as 𰐪 or 吝, which are both ancient characters.
