Brave and sturdy (勇捍): The upper character has the fanqie yong + zhong (yǒng). Gu Yewang says: ‘Valiant, resolute, and decisive.’ The Posthumous Titles Rules state: ‘Risking one's life for benevolence is called brave; giving one's body for righteousness is called brave; upholding righteousness without concealing it is called brave; knowing death and not avoiding it is called brave.’ A collator of the Shuowen says: ‘Four folios are missing here in the original edition; sentiment is close yet expresses what is distant, examining one yet concerning many.’ The Shuowen says: ‘Holding a gate with horizontal timber; takes 𢇂 as phonetic.’ 豩 has the fanqie hu + guan (huān); 𢇂 has the same sound as above. The Zishu sometimes writes it as 官; the sūtra writing it as 關 is incorrect; it has the fanqie pi + mian (biǎn).
