Jackal (野干: in Sanskrit, śṛgāla. Its shape and color are blue-yellow like a dog; it moves in packs, and its cries at night sound like a wolf. The character is also written 射干. According to the Zixu fu: 'Tengyuan and shegan.' Sima Biao, Guo Pu, and others all annotate: 'The shegan resembles a fox but is smaller and can climb trees.' She is pronounced ye. The Guangzhi states: 'It nests in perilous cliffs and tall trees.' The Chan scripture saying 'seeing a wild fox and also seeing a yegan' refers to this).
