聰叡（上蒼紅反尚書云聽曰聰又作哲考聲云聰耳聽明審也說文云察也從耳怱聲怱音蔟紅反下悅惠反尚書云叡作聖鄭注禮記云叡思之精也古今正字云叡深明也從𣦻從谷省目聲𣦻在安反）。

聰叡 (the first character is pronounced [fanqie: 蒼 + 紅]; the Shangshu says: "Hearing is called 聰 [cōng]"; it is also written 哲. Kaosheng says: "聰 means the hearing of the ears is clear and discerning." Shuowen jiezi says: "It means to observe; composed of 耳 [ear] with 怱 as the phonetic"; 怱 is pronounced [fanqie: 蔟 + 紅]. The second character is pronounced [fanqie: 悅 + 惠]; the Shangshu says: "叡 makes sagacity." Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Liji says: "叡 is the refinement of thinking." Gujin zhengzi says: "叡 means profoundly insightful; composed of 𣦻 and 谷 with the eye [目] abbreviated as the phonetic"; 𣦻 is pronounced [fanqie: 在 + 安]).
