"Venomous snake (蚖蛇)" (in ancient script written as 螈; the Zilin gives wu and guan in fanqie [yuán]: a skink/lizard. Cui Bao's Gujin zhu states: "The newt [rongyuan], another name for which is 'snake-healer' [sheyi], when large is three feet long; its color is deep dark, and it is adept at bewitching people; another name is xuanyuan." The Hanshu mentions xuanyuan; Wei Zhao says: "Xuan means black; yuan is a lizard." In the sūtras, the 'black yuan' is suspected to be this creature, but it is not stated to be poisonous and harmful to people, so it is not yet certain. In various sūtras it is also written as 虺 [huǐ], xu and gui in fanqie: a poisonous reptile with one body and two mouths, whose head and tail resemble one another).
