防援（上符亡反鄭箋詩云防亦援也說文云防隄也從𨸏方聲也袁願反國語云為四隣之援也左氏傳云要結大援是也說文從手爰聲也）。

Defence and support (防援; the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 符亡 [fáng]. Zheng Xuan's Commentary on the Classic of Poetry states: '防 (fáng) also means support.' The Shuowen jiezi states: '防 means an embankment. It takes 𨸏 as radical and 方 as phonetic.' [The second character] is pronounced with the fanqie 袁願 [yuàn]. The Guoyu states: 'Serving as the support (援) of the four neighbours.' The Zuozhuan states: 'To establish a great alliance of support,' which is this. The Shuowen jiezi states that it takes 'hand' [手] as radical and 爰 as phonetic).
