臭澀（上醜狩反說文禽走齅而知其跡者犬也故從犬從自自古鼻字也會意字下森戢反前第四卷已具釋也）。

Foul and astringent (臭澀: the first character [臭] is fanqie 醜狩 [chòu]. The Shuowen says: "That beasts track by scent and know their traces is due to dogs; hence it is formed from 'dog' [犬] and 'nose' [自], 自 being the ancient character for nose." It is an ideogrammatic compound. The second character [澀] is fanqie 森戢 [sè], which was already fully explained above in Fascicle 4).
