Not altering (不革: the ancient script for 革 has three forms, 革, [懂-重+(巫/十)], and 諽, all the same; pronounced [gu + he >] *gé*. 革 means to change, that is, to alter and renew. The Shuowen jiezi states: "Animal skin stripped of hair is called 革"; it means removing the hair through processing to transform and change it. Thus the character contains 囗; 囗 represents a city-state: after thirty years in a state, the laws are changed, taking the sense of distinction and difference. 囗 is pronounced *wéi*).
