忼愾（上康朗反下康蓋反集訓云忼愾者壯士不得志也鄭箋毛詩云太息也廣雅懣也或作慷慨字也說文從心並形聲字也）。

Indignant and sighing [忼愾] (the first character is pronounced *kang* + *lang* [kǎng]; the second is pronounced *kang* + *gai* [kài]. The *Jixun* states: 'Kangkai describes a vigorous man who cannot achieve his ambitions.' Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the *Mao Shi* says: 'To sigh deeply.' The *Guangya* states: 'To be grieved and frustrated.' It is also written as 慷慨. The *Shuowen* states: 'Both take "heart" [心] as semantic classifier and are phono-semantic characters').
