塞澀（參戢反說文不滑也從水從四止上二止倒書下二止正書是澀字之意也會意字經文從人三止非也不成字書人之誤也）。

Blocked and astringent [塞澀] (pronounced *can* + *ji* [sè]. The *Shuowen* states: 'Not smooth; it takes "water" [水] and four "footprints/stops" [止]; the upper two 止 are written inverted and the lower two 止 are upright, which conveys the meaning of roughness/astringency.' It is an associative compound. In the sūtra text it is written with "person" [人] and three 止, which is incorrect and does not form a valid character; it is a copyist's error).
