The *Shuowen* states: 'Not smooth; it takes "water" [水] and four "footprints/stops" [止]; the upper two 止 are written inverted and the lower two 止 are upright, which conveys the meaning of roughness/astringency.' It is an associative compound. In the sūtra text it is written with "person" [人] and three 止, which is incorrect and does not form a valid character; it is a copyist's error).
