Bite and gnaw 䶩齧 (for the upper character 䶩, none of the dictionaries have this character; the sūtra translators wrote it at their own convenience. It has traditionally been pronounced with the fanqie zai-zhu [t͡sǐɛ], which is incorrect; it should properly be written as 𪘨, with the fanqie zhi-jie [ʈɣɛi], meaning biting so as to sink the teeth into it. The Guangya says: “𪘨 means to gnaw.” The ancients explained it as: “severing sinews and bones.” There is also the pronunciation of 䶩 as jie [cut], which is likewise incorrect. The lower character has the fanqie yan-jie [ŋiɛt]; the earlier Sound and Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra says: “It means biting. Light biting is 齧; sinking the teeth in is 𪘨, which is the correct meaning.” The Gujin zhengzi says: “齧 also means to bite; it is derived from radical 齒 [teeth] with 㓞 [qì] as phonetic.” The sūtra writes it under the radical 口 as 嚙, which is incorrect; 㓞 has the fanqie kou-ba [kʰɣat]).
