系嫡（上奚計反爾雅云系繼也世本有帝系篇謂子孫相繼續也說文亦繫也從系系聲也籀文從爪作[爪/((ㄠ/八)*(ㄠ/八))]下丁歷反字書云嫡長也說文孎也從女啇聲）。

系嫡 (The first character has the fanqie 奚 + 計. The Erya says: '系 means to continue.' The Shiben has a "Chapter on Imperial Lineage" [帝系篇], meaning sons and grandsons succeeding one another. The Shuowen also says: 'To tie/continue; formed with "thread" [系] as semantic and 系 as phonetic.' The Great Seal script forms it with "claw" [爪] as [爪/((ㄠ/八)*(ㄠ/八))]. The second character has the fanqie 丁 + 歷. The Zishu says: '嫡 means eldest son.' The Shuowen says: '嫡 means legitimate son; formed with "woman" [女] as semantic and 啇 as phonetic.')
