Dìgēng (遞更, alternately / successively; the upper [character] has the fanqie [tí + lǐ]; Zheng's commentary on the Erya states: "Dì (遞) means to alternate or exchange." Zhuangzi states: "Alternately lying down, alternately rising up." The Shuowen states: "Gēng (更, to alternate/change)"; it takes '辵' (movement) with '虒' as phonetic; '虒' is pronounced sī. Some write it with '第' and '辵', which is incorrect, though '递' has the same gloss and usage. The lower [character] has the fanqie [gé + xíng]; Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli states: "Gēng (更) is like dāi (代, to replace/succeed)." The Shuowen states: "To alter"; it takes '攴' with '丙' as phonetic. Now written as '更', which is a vulgar character).
