Digging a well [鑿丼] (The first character has the sound zuo [昨]. The Shenglei says: "Zao [鑿] means a chisel [鏨]; zan has the fanqie zi + xian [紫陷反]." The Shuowen jiezi says: "To bore through wood; derived from metal [金] with the abbreviated phonetic zuo [糳]; zuo has the sound zuo [作]. All characters such as 糳, 鑿, and 業 derive from 丵, which depicts bamboo and trees growing densely; 丵 has the fanqie [...] + xue [𱭏學反]." The second character jing [丼] has the fanqie jing + ying [精郢反]; it is a pictographic character, with the dot in the middle depicting water. Nowadays it is traditionally written without the dot as 井).
