谿谷(上啟鷄反爾雅水注川也說文山竇無所通亦從水作溪從石作磎是磻磎字見纂韻非此義也下公哭反說文泉出通流為谷從水半見出於口會意字也)。

Ravines and valleys (谿谷: the upper character is qi-ji [fanqie]. The Erya says: "Water pouring into a stream." The Shuowen says: "A mountain cleft through which there is no passage." It is also written with the radical 水 as 溪, and with the radical 石 as 磎, as in the name Fanxi (磻磎), found in the Zuan Yun, which does not have this meaning. The lower character is gong-gu [fanqie]. The Shuowen says: "A spring emerging and flowing freely makes a valley. It takes its semantic classifier from 水 'water', half visible coming forth from a 口 'mouth'; it is an ideogrammatic compound").
