摩納婆 (Sanskrit [māṇava]. The translator, the Great Tang Tripiṭaka Master [Xuanzang], said: "This means 'brahman youth' (chudong)." However, when Tripiṭaka Master Śubhakarasiṃha translated the Mahāvairocana-sūtra and, together with the monk Yixing, composed the Commentary, it states: "摩納娑 (mānasa) should properly be translated as 'the supreme self' (shengchuwǒ). The non-Buddhists of that school claim that there is a spiritual self (puruṣa/ātman) within the mind and body that is most supreme and wonderful. They constantly contemplate the self within their own body and mind, which is about an inch long. The Dazhidulun also states that they posit a spiritual self, either like a mustard seed or like a bean or wheat grain, necessarily of a pure colour." If it is translated as "brahman youth," the Sanskrit should be māṇava. The two translations differ, and it is not known which is correct; please verify with Sanskrit manuscripts).
