植眾（上承力反纂韻植種也考聲植多也方言植立也樹也字書植播也說文戶植也從木直聲也或作殖說文脂膏久殖非此義也下終仲反爾雅眾多也國語云獸三為群人三為眾說文亦云眾多也從乑音吟乑字三人也從橫目目眾意也）。

植眾 (zhízhòng; the upper character has the fanqie 承力 [zhí]; the Zanyun says it means to plant or cultivate; the Kaosheng says it means many; the Fangyan says it means to set upright, or to plant; the Zishu says it means to sow; the Shuowen jiezi says it means the upright post of a door; it is composed of 木 [wood] with 直 [zhí] giving the sound; it is also written as 殖, but the Shuowen jiezi notes that that means long-accumulated fat or grease, which is not the meaning here; the lower character has the fanqie 終仲 [zhòng]; the Erya says it means numerous; the Guoyu states: 'Three beasts make a herd, three people make a crowd'; the Shuowen jiezi also says it means numerous; it is composed of 乑, pronounced yín, where 乑 represents three persons, together with a horizontal 目 [eye], conveying the sense of a multitude of eyes).
