挫辱（上租臥反鄭注考工記挫折也賈逵折鋒曰挫考聲挫抑也說文挫摧也從手坐聲也小篆坐字從土從留省古文從二人作坐下而燭反賈逵注國語辱恥也考聲辱惡枉羞也說文從寸寸在辰下失耕之時於封壃之上則戮之辰者農之時也故房星為辰為田候也）。

挫辱 (cuòrǔ; the upper character has the fanqie 租臥 [cuò]; Zheng's commentary on the Kaogongji says that cuò means to bend or break; Jia Kui says that breaking the tip is called cuò; the Kaosheng says that cuò means to subdue; the Shuowen jiezi says that cuò means to break; it is composed of 手 [hand] with 坐 [zuò] giving the sound; the small seal form of 坐 is composed of 土 [earth] with an abbreviated 留; in ancient script it is written with two 人 [persons] as 坐; the lower character has the fanqie 而燭 [rǔ]; Jia Kui's commentary on the Guoyu says that rǔ means shame; the Kaosheng says that rǔ means wrongdoing, injustice, and disgrace; the Shuowen jiezi says it is composed of 寸 [hand/measure] beneath 辰; when one misses the farming season on the borderlands, one is punished; 辰 represents the agricultural season, hence the constellation Fang is identified with chén and serves as the marker for field labors).
